How to Master Your Money Mindset for Small Business Success

Can we just be honest about something?

BUSINESS OWNERSHIP MINDSET IS THE HARDEST PART.

All of the tricky details involved in actually running a small business—the offer, the fulfillment process, the many logistics, the marketing, the management, the finances, etc.—aren’t even the hardest parts, right? I mean they’re tough; don’t get me wrong. But for me, what’s often complicating my life as a female small business owner the most is all the back and forth going on in my own head. Can you relate? I’ll bet you can.

So much of small business ownership is a mind game, a discourse between our good and evil shoulder angels, if you will.

“I dream of…” “That will never be you.” “I can offer to the world…” “More capable people are already doing that.” “I can solve…” “People don’t need that.” “My ideas are worth…” “People won’t pay that.” “I can be successful…” “You’ll never have enough.”

Sound at all familiar? I’ve traipsed those hills and valleys many times. And have usually responded to such negative thoughts by either “getting realistic”; AKA, letting them beat me. Or by hustling extra hard. As if by overworking myself I can somehow override my limiting mindset.

ANNA CANTWELL PRIORITIZES GETTING TO THE ROOT OF THE ISSUE.

It wasn’t until connecting with Anna Cantwell, soul coach and mindfulness expert, that I learned how important it is to both the success of my small business and to my mental health as its owner to get to the root of the issue.

The truth is that I need to neither cower to nor suppress the natural instincts of my mind. I need to, rather, master my mindset so that those natural instincts can serve me in helpful and effective ways.

MASTERING OUR MONEY MINDSET IS CRUCIAL TO SMALL BUSINESS HEALTH.

Especially where it comes to money, as we all know that, whether we like it or not, our small businesses’ chances at reliable longevity really come down to money and the way we handle it.

With that in mind, I invited Anna to visit the members of Profit to Prosperity, my digital community of female business owners who have meaningfully invested in quality business financial education and direct access to virtual CFO services, for a taste of her Abundance Mindset Mastery program.

OWN YOUR DESIRES, TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR MONEY, AND GET YOUR MONEY MINDSET RIGHT.

Through this program, Anna helps her students own their desires, take charge of their money, and get their money mindset right.

And she generously agreed to hit the highlights with us via Zoom on a lovely Tuesday evening. A truly marvelous time was had by all! We learned so much, embraced new tools for shifting limiting beliefs toward truth, and departed refreshed and encouraged.

We realized when Anna said that even for the super-rich, money mindset is an issue—as in, you can have tons of money and still feel freaked out about it all the time—that none of us are alone or negatively set apart because of the particulars surrounding our individual financial situations.

Our goal, therefore, was not necessarily to adopt a certain mindset dependent on those particulars, but to work toward feeling good about our real financial situation as it currently stands. To improve the health of our relationship with money.

And we dove right in.

ESTABLISH VALUES-BASED GOALS REGARDING MONEY.

First, we discussed what should be our values-based goals regarding money: The first being to see more of it in the hands of people who manage it with intentionality and for the good of the world. And then to be those people.

How to accomplish those goals?

HOW TO MASTER THE UNCONSCIOUS MIND:

Anna says the answer lies in the unconscious mind. Did you know that your behavior and manner of thinking are controlled only 5% by the conscious mind? The other 95% of who you are, what you do, and how you think are controlled by your unconscious mind.

Basically, the corners of your brain you forgot were there are the parts running the show. Is that a little bit scary? Maybe so. Because the unconscious mind tends to overgeneralize things based on a narrow range of related experiences.

For example, you may have dated a total jerk in college. And now you unconsciously believe that all flip-flop-wearing frat boys are terrible and are, therefore, cutting yourself off from all men who appreciate open-toed footwear and cheap beer… Which, actually, may not be such a bad thing after all…

But what if, because of a narrow range of experiences, you unconsciously believe that all wealthy people in the world are also horrific jerks? And here you are trying to establish and grow a meaningfully profitable small business. Think those contradicting ideas are going to clash and hold you back? Anna says you can bet on it.

REPLACE UNCONSCIOUS BELIEFS WITH POSITIVE, TRUTHFUL CONSCIOUS BELIEFS.

So let’s attack that negative unconscious belief with thoughts that are not only more positive, but also more truthful.

The truth is that wealthy people are just as likely to be kind philanthropists and diligent business people who treat their employees with respect and dignity and invest their wealth of funds in ways that stimulate the economy and create opportunities for those less monetarily fortunate as they are likely to be jerks. It’s the character of the person that counts, not their money.

And who are we to judge another for already possessing the very thing we want? That’s not fair to them, and it’s equally unfair to you. Because are you a jerk for desiring wealth? Wealth in and of itself isn’t bad. And it allows you more opportunities to make a positive impact on the world. So no, you’re not a jerk. You’re free to desire what you desire.

Practice living in that freedom by blessing and complimenting people, rather than judging them for possessing something you want. And then preach to yourself that whatever it is they have is also available to you. Because it is.

On the flip side of the same coin, does your mind throw you for a loop when having to pay bills? Mine does.

I worked so hard for this money, right? And we just decided it’s ok to desire wealth! Seems only natural to despise paying bills.

But just like resentment toward people who possess the things I want, a begrudging attitude toward paying my bills will only hold me back in the long run.

Because small business innovation and growth require investment. I’ll never reach my goals if I’m unwilling to loosen my grip some. And I’ll miss out on enjoying the rich blessings each of those bills represent.

Imagine if I thought about my rent/mortgage as a bill I get to pay in order to provide my family with a comfortable place to live, grow, and make memories together. Oh, the peace even just that small adjustment in thinking brings me.

And what if I thought of paying for necessary business finance education and new, innovative tools for my small business as taking healthy steps toward a brighter future? Anna says that not only will I achieve that brighter future, but I’ll also be happier when I get there.

What we most appreciated about these steps, plus the several others that Anna shared, is that they’re easily actionable. We could all put them into practice the moment we hung up the Zoom call! And then be merrily on our way toward reaching our goals.
